I am deeply saddened and shocked by the tragedy that has struck long-suffering Venezuela as a result of the two recent earthquakes. A country that has endured many difficulties, challenges, and trials throughout its history, yet has always remained standing tall and dignified.

I read today in the international news that, unfortunately, about three thousand people lost their lives in the earthquakes, that a very large number of people are still missing, and that rescue teams are now suspending their search efforts… My heart aches as I think of all those who lost their lives so suddenly and unexpectedly, their families, their loved ones, their grief, as well as the anguish of those searching for any sign of life from their own loved ones who are still missing…

My thoughts are also with all those who, thankfully, survived but whose homes were destroyed—and how much help and support they need right now. Both practical assistance and psychological support. The Venezuelan government, in cooperation with the international community, must ensure that these people are provided with immediate shelter and that they have access to water, food, and medicine—basic necessities.

I call on everyone to help in any way they can. The international community must demonstrate its solidarity through concrete actions.

I am certain that Venezuela will manage to overcome this as well. I hope and pray that the victims may rest in peace, and I wish a great miracle could happen so that all those who are missing may be found safe… May the people of Venezuela be safe and strong.

My condolences…
