Some people prefer winter, while others prefer summer. In the younger years of my life, I liked winter more. Then, as I grew older, I came to love summer more and dislike winters. Growing even older, however, I realized that every season ultimately has its own beauty. In autumn, everything begins to calm down and rest. It is as if all beings are preparing for the winter that is about to come. The creatures of the earth begin to curl up lazily and sweetly. The nourishing rains begin, quenching the thirst of the earth, while their sound and scent gently lull us. The cool breeze, which sometimes becomes stronger, fills the air. Some trees let their leaves fall to the ground and quietly wrap themselves in the undisturbed serenity of their existence. Autumn certainly carries a sweet warmth within it. In our homes, after mid-November or towards the end of the month, we begin to renew our spaces, dressing them warmly and beautifully with carpets, throws, and fabrics, perhaps bringing some furniture closer together, preparing everything for the winter to come.
Then comes magical December with its decorations and gifts, its treats and fairy tales. As the first month of winter, it welcomes the season ahead. A season that certainly has its own blessings. It makes us appreciate the warmth and coziness of our homes, the hot coffee or tea in our favorite mugs, the sweet “nestling” beneath blankets, the playtime and cuddles with our little animalsThe savory snacks and sweets we enjoy while watching movies, whether alone or with company, the tealight candles we may light, the scented sticks that bring even more warmth and positive energy into our spaces. The books we buy to read and shopping in general, all of which bring us joy and a sense of renewal.
I will briefly step away from the subject to say that, on days of extreme cold and harsh weather conditions, my mind always goes to people who do not have a roof over their heads, a home, and that thought deeply saddens me… I consider it unacceptable that, on our planet, people are still being left to their fate in the year 2024, while governments have still not ensured that no one remains homeless and that everyone has the basic right to shelter and a home. At least, thanks to the sensitivity of certain people, municipalities, NGOs, organizations, and institutions, there are fortunately some places where people in need can seek refuge, especially during extreme weather conditions. So, if we see a homeless person, we can inform and encourage them to turn to the appropriate support structures.
Returning now to the main subject: Spring arrives, this blessed season that makes everything bloom, even our hearts. The weather becomes pleasant, flowers blossom, gardens turn green, the days grow longer, and we emerge from our shells. It is the perfect season for long walks, outings in nature, excursions, even small one-day escapes, and engaging in hobbies we love. We ourselves become more extroverted, more “open-hearted,” just like nature. International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day, May Day, Easter, the flower wreaths of May…
And with its ending, spring introduces us to our wonderful summer, where the days become even longer and we become even more outgoing. We put away carpets and blankets, buy new clothes for the summer season, swimsuits, towels, sunscreens, and dress lightly and carefree. We enjoy the beaches and the sea, surrendering ourselves to the magic and benefits of water and sunlight. We lose ourselves in nature, in unique sunsets, in the breathtaking sight of the full moon over the sea. We never tire of walks, concerts, the trips we are able to take — if we are fortunate enough to do so — and the various events we can attend. We enjoy ice cream, fresh seasonal vegetables in our salads, summer fruits, refreshing juices, and cocktails. We spend more time outside, on our balconies, in our yards, on rooftops, or verandas. All of the above, together with our summer vacations, the greater amount of free time, and perhaps fewer working hours or days (although, as we understand, this is not always the case, since some people work just as much or even more during summer), create our own personal paradises. And then autumn comes again, and the same cycle begins anew. Because everything is a cycle. And that is the beauty of it…
